The impact of covid-19 on labour marker in Egypt (Between 2019 and 2022)

Abstract

On the 14th of February 2020, the Egyptian Ministry of Health announced the first case of the emerging coronavirus. Then, Egyptian government did the lockdown measures, So the Egypt’s labour market was somewhat affected by the pandemic. The paper will shed light on some Labour Market indicators in Egypt, which shows the changes that occurred in the Egyptian labor market since the beginning of the pandemic until now. The percentage of the economic activity rate decreased from 41.9 per cent in the second quarter (April - June) 2019 to 38.9 per cent in in the second quarter (April - June) 2020. Unemployment Rate increased during the same period (7.5 per cent to 9.6 per cent by the standard definition). The employment to population ratio decreased between (April - June) 2019 (38.8 per cent) and (April - June) 2020 (35.1 per cent). This reflects the impact of this pandemic on the Egyptian labor market, and by the way on the Egyptian economy.
