Production of Public Statistics: Challenges and Possibilities

Abstract

The present work seeks to identify the challenges faced in the production of public statistics and discuss the opportunities that arise through the use of alternative data sources, especially big data, as well as through data integration techniques from different sources. available. Key points are listed to be considered when discussing the production of public statistics, such as its history, concepts and definitions relevant to the theme. Challenges to be faced in the process of producing public statistics are identified, considering various limitations with emphasis on access to data, funding, human resources and legislation. Finally, ways are pointed out for statistical production that involve the use of alternative methods and data sources, in particular the integration of data from different sources and the use of big data. To meet the proposed objectives, a brief history of the production and use of public statistics is presented, as well as pertinent definitions. Challenges faced for the production of public statistics are pointed out, which are related to access to data, financing, human resources and legislation. Strategies for coping with the limitations for statistical production are also presented, one of a mainly methodological nature and the other of a mainly technological nature. Finally, conclusions and lessons learned will be presented, followed by a proposal for continuing the research, in order to contribute to the debate on the topic.
