Abstract

There is an urgent need to measure and monitor the Gender Bases Violence (GBV) from different perspectives to prevent, protect victims and prosecute perpetrators. Since violence against women (VAW) is a complex phenomenon, it is preferable to address it using different sources and techniques; only in this way it is possible, in fact, to design better policies to address this important topic.

ISTAT has implemented over the years a multi-source approach aimed at providing a complex, systematic and extensive data-warehouse able to knowing:

(i) the roots of GBV,

(ii) the incidence, prevalence, frequency of the phenomenon and its level of reporting,

(iii) the type of support and exit routes provided to survivors,

(iv) the measures taken against perpetrators of violence

(iv) the new forms of violence produced by digital society (the new forms of GBV such as revenge porn, bodyshaming, slutshaming, etc.).

(v) the role of social media in GBV, reinforcing or hindering (through the forms of public outrage) the different forms of GBV, and providing an analysis of the sentiment and emotions of social media discussions.

The paper will explain the relationship between the different sources - sample population surveys, administrative data, register statistics, big-data analysis -, what questions they aim to address and the a link between them.
