Abstract

Title of presentation: Measuring digital platform employment, gig work, and dependent contractors in Canada through multiple Labour Force Survey supplements

This part of the session will showcase the approach that is currently guiding the collection, analysis, and dissemination of data on the gig and digital platform economy at Statistics Canada through the Canadian Labour Force Survey (LFS).

The first part of the presentation will discuss the importance of distinguishing between the concepts of digital platform employment, dependent contractors and gig work. The second part will describe how this strategy has guided the design of three supplements to the Canadian LFS. Finally, lessons learned and results from the December 2022 supplement on digital platform employment will be presented.
