Abstract

Food sovereignty expresses the right of each nation to conduct an autonomous agricultural policy that prioritizes ecological agricultural practices and local food production for regional and national markets. This is a state objective for countries that involves an approach in terms of law, which makes its quantification more complex. The exploration of the current statistical system raises other challenges, related to the delimitation of the food preferences of the countries, which constitute a key variable in the 6 pillars of food sovereignty. The identification of indicators that make it possible to capture and compare achievements in food sovereignty raises challenges of harmonization and classification of dimensions and food products, especially if several sources of information are used. The basis of comparison could not be annual. It is uncertain whether the statistical systems present the same horizon for all the indicators. Other challenges are posed, such as the adaptation of indicators generally designed to monitor closely related notions, such as food security or biodiversity, to the different dimensions of food sovereignty. The gap is important and there is a need of more intensive exploration of possible data sources and methods and further clarification of its definition.
