Ottawa welcomes ISI World Statistics Congress 2023

Ottawa welcomes ISI World Statistics Congress 2023

OTTAWA, CANADA - 2023

Ottawa will host more than 2,000 delegates during the 64th ISI World Statistics Congress, 16-20 July 2023. The 64th ISI WSC 2023 is the leading event on Statistics and Data Science worldwide. It has been biennially organised since 1887 by the International Statistical Institute (ISI), currently based in The Hague.

The four-day Congress, which will take place at the Shaw Centre in Ottawa, will also make use of the Westin, Les Suites, Lord Elgin, Novotel, Sheraton and University of Ottawa for accommodation, totalling more than 2,950 room nights.

The Ottawa bid was won in 2020 with support from the School of Mathematics and Statistics at Carleton University, the University of Ottawa and Statistics Canada based in Ottawa. Throughout the bid process Ottawa sought a number of ways to add significant partnership value to the client association and delegates, including support with their opening reception, digital signage at key transport hubs such as the airport and complimentary Light Rail Transit passes for all delegates.

In a message to members, ISI President Stephen Penneck said: “In past years, ISI has brought together thousands of delegates from more than 120 countries. After our successful Virtual Congress in 2021, we look forward to meeting friends and colleagues from around the world in-person. We will have a rich scientific programme that includes invited sessions, contributed sessions, short courses, tutorials, and time to meet friends and colleagues. We will be attracting academics, mathematical statisticians, data scientists, applied statisticians, official statisticians and statisticians from the world of business.”

Once again, this event also demonstrates the close working partnership that Ottawa Tourism has developed with The Hague Convention Bureau over recent years. The postponed ISI World Statistics Congress 2021 in The Hague will now take place in 2025 and the two destinations have worked closely to promote each other’s events, support each other’s bids and drive delegate numbers to support the ISI).

Ottawa Tourism’s vice-president, meetings and major events, Lesley Mackay said: “Not only does this event represent a great piece of business for the city, it also truly demonstrates once again the power of working in partnership with clients and other organisations throughout the industry. As a team we sought as many different creative ways as possible to support the local bid team and help them bring the event to Ottawa – working with The Hague to support their need to move dates due to Covid was a pleasure and shows what we can all do when we work together.”
