Can statistical learning be fun and entertaining? A walking through case studies of statistical thinking with PBL and Shiny App

Abstract

Statistical models are competitive due to their probabilistic reasoning and by transcribing data into information through a few characterizations extraction, which enables to quantify and generalize the observed phenomena. Though, statistical inference classes/tutorials can be very difficult at first sight. This study shows some study cases which explored data visualization and inferential estimation toolbox with the Shiny app enabling data decision-making support towards statistical learning (e.g. SPC charts and Extreme Value Theory). We presented some cases through data storytelling with PBL that improved statistical teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate courses (in Brazil and Chile). The active methodology adopted, always per semester, enabled the development of data decision-making reasoning based on modeling and visualization of the problem, which produced great results, and has been applied over the past 7 years.
