Abstract

In North Africa, as in other developing countries, rural women play a crucial role in agriculture, food security and nutrition. Moreover, they are an essential link in the achievement of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and Agenda 2063. Indeed, they represent a significant share of both the total population and agricultural employment and play multiple roles in the food system. However, these women still face many problems exacerbated by the effects of these crises, including: access to land, training, information, inputs, technologies and financing.

In this sense, this article will focus on the comparison over time (2000-2021) of the following indicators: The importance of women in the total and rural population; the poverty rate by gender; Women's access to education by area of residence, women's share of agricultural employment; the characteristics of rural women's agricultural employment, including: illiteracy rate, educational level, diploma, main occupation, occupational status and underemployment. In addition, we examined the structure of rural women's time use. The article will also focus on the comparison of these indicators between some countries (Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria,...) based on the FAC or the PCA.
