Abstract
This talk details the experiences in interdisciplinary teaching and research at the data science laboratory at the University of Calcutta, India. Students of the university, in general, have sound mathematical and technical skills but practical applications and innovations have proved to be a challenge and the data science laboratory was started to bridge this gap. Some initiatives of the lab include short executive courses, creation of support forums on social media for business analysts and establishment of university-academia partnerships for joint training and placements. This talk will discuss the impact of the programme and point out various bottlenecks and creative solutions which have been necessitated.
