Innovatively transforming population and migration statistics

Abstract

Our transformation of future population and migration statistics are at a pivotal moment. We have an ambitious programme of work ahead to make our estimates more timely and granular as well as improving the quality of our estimates. We will present to ISI how we can produce high quality population and migration estimates using a ‘Dynamic Population Model’ using strengths from multiple administrative datasets. The estimates are very promising, paving a future that doesn’t rely on a decennial population collection such as a census and instead offers timely and frequent population estimates that are coherent across stock and flow estimates. Our research also demonstrates how administrative data can better measure actual patterns of migration than costly intentions based surveys. It enables flexibility in definitions of population and migration to better meet user needs.
