Abstract

The World Bank, in partnership with other international agencies, have developed and implemented a range of standards-based tools and guidelines that have allowed many countries to release microdata. In many cases data are being sourced and combined from multiple sources. For example, surveys, GIS, along with remote sensing and administrative data. This presentation discusses the importance of international standards for documenting and describing these different sources of data. It also includes an overview of how these standards are implemented in a new set of dissemination tools developed by the World Bank. Finally, because microdata derived from surveys and other sources often contain sensitive and identifying information, safe release of data can be challenging. We therefore also include a summary of guidelines and tools developed by the international community and the World Bank for disclosure control and safe release of microdata.
