Foundations for statistical organisations: GAMSO and GSBPM

Abstract

The Generic Statistical Business Process Model, GSBPM, was the first of the ModernStats models, with its first version released 15 years ago. The GSBPM is still the most well-known and most widely used ModernStats model in the community. It is considered to be the main framework process model for statistical production in all NSOs around the world and it has been implemented and used in many different – and sometimes surprising – ways.

As organising information, providing an overview of the whole organisation lead much further than the statistical business process only, the GAMSO, the Generic Activity Model for Statistical Organizations, was established. It is used by statistical organisations to get a more complete picture of the organisation as a whole, driving innovation and change processes in NSOs.

A wide range of tools and use cases are available to help statistical organisations to implement these models and to get inspiration from others on how to use them in practice. As a common language, there is a lot of added value to find out what other statistical organisations are innovating, what methods and tools they are using. To keep up with the changing trends in the world of official statistics and to fulfil their purpose as framework models, the GSBPM and GAMSO have been changed many times to remain relevant for the world of official statistics and this will not be any different in the future.
